Faun

Faun, Woodstock in the Concours parade at the BCMBR Windermere in 2008

The Faun was a small river cruiser based on the Falcon Hull. Unusually for a sailing boat, the Falcon started life as a motor launch. Designed by Sir Eldon Trimingham as a service launch for the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club in the mid 50's.

It  had a small cuddy cabin and was fitted with a Seagull Coventry outboard motor with long range tank and tiller extension.

The Faun was officially launched at the 1959 London Boat Show. Many were completed for the River Hire market.

The one known to the club is "Woodstock" which is based generally near Henley on the Thames but she is trailed to other rallies in the country throughout the season. "Woodstock" has been converted to inboard power; originally with a Stuart-Turner P55 8HP which was not very successful; and now sports a Vetus 18HP Diesel engine. The owner would have us believe that it is so efficient, he has yet to use up the original half-tankful of diesel!

Here's Rupert, heading off into the wide blue yonder of Lake Windermere. It might look like a steam boat, but propulsion is via a Dolphin two cylinder two stroke engine.

A scan of the Fairey Marine company magazine 'Fairey Review' announcement of the Falcon is available to download below.
